Seaview House by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects

A holiday house by the coast is part of the Australian dream and a reality for some. Let me introduce you to the Seaview House, showcasing a new take on the Australian beach house thanks to the ingenious team at Jackson Clements Burrows Architects. Located in the Victorian coastal township of old Barwon Heads, this single family home truly stands out against all of the post war beach houses that line the street. What was once an aging beach shack, the newly designed coastal retreat now showcases three separate pavilions connected by glazed walkways to maximise privacy and to embrace the home’s natural surroundings. The kitchen, dining, and living areas are located in the south pavilion, acting as the hub of the home. Strategically designed, the pavilion is situated facing the river and soaks up the northern sun – perfect for lazy weekends in. Light timber cladding flows from the walls up to the gabled ceilings, elevating the height of the space. Black track lighting stretches from one side of the building to the other – a clever design feature to exaggerate the length of the open-planned space. In it’s own secluded northwest pavilion, the grand master bedroom, retreat, walk-in robe and ensuite forms a private sanctuary, accessible through a breezeway extended off one end of the main pavilion. The breezeway allows for cross-flow ventilation and assists with connecting the indoors with the outdoors, which is exactly what you’d want when you’re staying at the beach. The third pavilion, situated on the property’s northeastern aspect, is my favourite out of the three separate spaces. Timber battens create the gauze room’s shell, with a triple skin translucent polycarbonate covering its exterior, resulting in a well-ventilated space that truly shines.
