Design Spotlight: The TV Room

The living room is a special space, often comforting us at the end of a long day. Some may use it as a space for relaxation, some for entertaining; either way, this space should be just as beautiful as it is practical. Let’s face it – as much as we’d love great conversation and entertaining to be the main focus in a living room, as opposed to a television screen, the space still needs to be practical and enjoyable for every day living. Although many televisions are becoming more thin and streamlined as technology progresses, the stark black screen still demands attention, often taking away from the rest of the setting. A few ways to make this space extra appealing is through the use of cleverly placed focal points to divert your eye from the big screen, and here’s how… Whether it is a bright and beautiful David Bromley piece, or a tribal mask from a holiday in PNG’s Sepik River, a large piece of art is a great way to draw attention away from the television screen, incorporating colour and texture into the space. Carefully consider the scale of the piece as well as the positioning, and remember to select pieces that evoke a particular feeling that you want to welcome into the space. A perfectly decorated bookcase introduces colour and height into a living room, and is a great way to display your most treasured keepsakes and books – always a great topic of conversation! A wall of shelving will act as a huge statement, and cleverly conceals the TV – it’s a win-win! If you want to keep things a bit more pared back, then a black feature wall will create a great statement whilst also camouflaging the television screen. Don’t shy away from the moody colour – it’s a great way for brighter colours to pop in the space, and makes for a dramatic and luxurious aesthetic. Lastly, try and arrange your furniture with the focus away from the direction of the TV; if you have a beautiful row of windows or door, position your furniture with the view in mind.
