Interiors Inspiration: Powder Blue

Powder blue, baby blue, ice blue, angel blue – whichever term you choose, a light blue colour palette creates a really calm and serene ambience. Despite often being associated with a baby nursery or children’s rooms, powder blues actually make for a sophisticated and luxurious interior, which is why I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of the hue over the next while. This dreamy colour is exceptionally versatile, lending to both traditional and contemporary spaces. Its softening effect as a base palette allows for bolder colours to really shine: just take a look at decorator Isabel Lopez-Quesada and architect Nikos Moustroufis’ Greek island family retreat, for example. One room in particular that stands out to me is the family room. Framed with a powder blue floor and ceiling, the space really allows the bright orange accent chair and rich timbers in the antique Greek captain’s chair and chests to stand out for visual interest. A powder blue will also look clean and polished in a kitchen, adding a subtle splash of colour to the hub of the home. Kelly Deck Design and Terris Lightfoot Contracting designed a stunning transitional family home in Vancouver, Canada, which showcases a large entertainer’s kitchen adorned in the blue hue. Powder blue pendant lights, herringbone tiled backsplash, and upholstered stools add a contemporary edge to an otherwise more traditional kitchen. For more interiors inspiration, this Sydney project by Coco Republic Interior Design uses powder blues in the laundry and main bathroom to enhance a traditional aesthetic.
